Band Placement Audition Details
We have 3 concert band classes at PCHS: Symphonic Winds, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band. All band students are enrolled in the appropriate level class based upon auditions. You must be enrolled in band class to be eligible to participate in marching band.
Who should audition? All rising 9th-12th grade students have the opportunity to audition for Symphonic Winds and Symphonic Band. If you choose not to audition, you will be placed in Concert Band.
How do I audition? Rising 9th graders will audition during on of your middle school band classes when possible. Current PCHS Band students will audition during band class.
What should I prepare? The audition consists of three parts: an audition etude, major scales and arpeggios, and a chromatic scale. Contact your band director for the audition etudes.
Etudes: Perform the audition etude at the marked tempo. Pay attention to the given tempos, articulations, and dynamics. You will be scored in the following areas: tone, technique, rhythmic accuracy, articulation/style, dynamics/phrasing, interpretation/tempo.
Major Scales and Arpeggios: Play as many major scales and arpeggios as accurately during a 2 minute time limit. How many octaves you play for each scale and arpeggio is up to you. You will score 1 point per octave that is played correctly.
Chromatic Scale: You should play the largest range you can at the quickest tempo you can accurately.
